Fall Harvest

The weather is cooling down and Sage pranced her puppy paws through the pumpkin patch and apple orchard at Great Country Farm in Bluemont, VA. The day started with perfect weather for some time in the sun with a crisp cool breeze . As we arrived on the farm, Sage was quickly greeted by a very friendly farmhand who let her hop up on the tractor-pulled wagon he was driving. She rode like an experienced hay-rider as the wagon brought us across the fields from the farm toward the neighboring vineyard and apple orchard. Although the rush for apple picking was 2-3 weeks ago, there were still some trees at the back of the orchard that had some fresh apples hanging from the branches, glowing in the sun and ready for the plucking! After grabbing some Crispin Mutsu and Royal Empire apples, we hopped back on the wagon and headed back to the farm festival. This was a legit pumpkin patch where the pumpkins were on the ground mixed in with sunflower fields with pumpkin vines threaded around the muddy field. Sage went all the way toward the back of the field and found an area with lots and lots of pumpkins scattered all over the field. It was as if she was zeroed in on a particular pumpkin in the entire patch that she WANTED! When she found her pumpkin she circled it and then sat right next to it as if she was a working police K9 that had alerted on the prize. There wasn’t any question we had to take that pumpkin home. It was a fun afternoon on the farm and we look forward to visiting again with some fellow puppy friends next time!

A highlight of the day was watching the pig races! With fun country music playing and an announcer who sounded like he missed his calling as an auctioneer, we watched groups of pigs race around a mud track. They oinked and squealed as they raced for the ultimate prize…a farm fresh, homemade apple cider donut! We intended to go buy some of those from the market before we left, but got distracted with another wagon ride, this time to the farm’s pumpkin patch.

Watching the pig races. These little piggies were racing for apple cider donut prizes. Haha

Sage batted her cute eyelashes at everyone and made so many friends as we meandered around through the different activity areas. After starting the corn maze, Sage decided she’d rather backtrack back to the start and go up the stairs to watch the maze from the bird’s eye view with a little boy she befriended inside the maze. She found a giant pile of tractor tires to climb, sniffed around a row of giant sunflowers, and watched the farm workers use an old apple press make apple cider. She wandered around the livestock area where she greeted a goat and a goose through the fencing.
